Equinix Opens First Data Center in Indonesia with Launch of JK1 in Jakarta
Equinix has officially entered the Indonesian market with the launch of its first International Business Exchange (IBX) data center in Jakarta. Known as JK1, the facility is part of a strategic joint venture with PT Astra International Tbk, one of Indonesia’s largest conglomerates. This move underscores Equinix’s commitment to strengthening its presence in the Asia-Pacific region and capitalizing on Indonesia’s booming digital economy, which is forecasted to reach a value of US$130 billion by 2025.
Located in Jakarta’s Central Business District, JK1 is strategically positioned near major internet exchanges, offering connectivity to more than 50 local and international network service providers. The facility is designed to support the growing demand for secure, scalable digital infrastructure, enabling both local enterprises and global companies to deploy advanced technologies such as cloud computing and artificial intelligence. It also serves as a critical platform for businesses looking to expand their digital reach across Southeast Asia and beyond.
The launch has been welcomed by Indonesian government officials. Meutya Hafid, Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, hailed JK1 as a vital entry point for international technology firms and startups aiming to establish or expand operations in Indonesia. The data center is expected to strengthen the country’s digital capabilities and foster collaboration across the private sector, including with small and medium-sized businesses.
Ricky Kusmayadi, Deputy Minister for Investment Information Technology, highlighted JK1’s role in positioning Indonesia as a regional digital hub. He emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to attract foreign investment in the data center industry, particularly from partners committed to building a robust and diversified digital infrastructure.
Sustainability and AI-Ready Infrastructure
Equinix views Indonesia as a high-priority market. Cyrus Adaggra, President of Asia-Pacific at Equinix, reported strong customer interest at launch and reaffirmed the company’s long-term commitment to the region. Haris Izmee, Managing Director of Equinix Indonesia, pointed to the rapid growth of cloud adoption and the country’s thriving e-commerce sector—projected to reach US$120 billion by 2025—as key drivers behind the need for high-performance digital infrastructure.
The JK1 facility has been engineered with sustainability and future-readiness in mind. The eight-story data center will ultimately offer capacity for 1,600 cabinets and 5,300 square meters of colocation space. It incorporates advanced cooling technologies, including liquid cooling, to efficiently manage high-density workloads. The facility is designed to achieve a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.41, aligning with global energy efficiency standards set by ASHRAE. Additionally, Equinix has secured renewable energy credits to ensure the facility’s electricity consumption is fully offset by green energy sources.
Santosa, Director at Astra, emphasized that the partnership combines Equinix’s global expertise in digital infrastructure with Astra’s deep understanding of the Indonesian market. He noted that the shared objective is to extend equitable access to digital services across the country, regardless of location or time.
Global Expansion Continues
With the addition of JK1, Equinix now operates 270 data centers across 75 metro areas in 35 countries. In the Asia-Pacific region alone, the company runs 60 facilities and continues to expand, with new projects underway in Thailand and the Philippines.
The launch of JK1 represents a significant milestone for Equinix and a major step forward for Indonesia’s digital transformation journey.
